Dave Koch - thirty9 Artist

Dave Koch
"You may see something even more beautiful, something you would have missed if you had not taken the time to look at it from all angles. "
~ Dave Koch

Meet the thirty9 Photographer

Dave Koch has felt drawn to shooting photography for as long as he can remember. (He’s our only artist who can say his first camera was a Mickey Mouse-shaped 126.) He eventually moved up to a Minolta 35mm and used flashlights to light his subjects at night. Today, Dave’s camera equipment is undoubtedly more sophisticated but his sense of resourcefulness towards his craft remains. “What keeps me going is changing it up. Changing subjects, changing styles, changing goals. Anything that moves my professional goalposts and refreshes my eyes and brain.” Dave finds multiple aspects of photography interesting - lines, colors, contrasts, shadows. If something catches his eye, he will look to see why, then decide how to capture what it was he found interesting. “Photography is not about the best camera or advanced technical knowledge, it is all about putting yourself in a position to take a wonderful image.” Dave doesn't care for quiet, dull images, he wants them to be “big and thunderous,” the kind that grab you by the collar and demand you look at them. He believes each specialty has an effect on the other, so shooting buildings has made him a better landscape artist because it taught him new ways to put images together. Ultimately, his most effective visual guide is his intuition. “I know when I have captured a great moment; I feel a good image happening. That is the payoff.”
