Meet the thirty9 Photographer

Few photographers can say they’ve had the honor of hearing a guest lecture from Ansel Adams in a college photography class. The college student was his sister and he was along for the ride with their mother, but the experience solidified Larry’s path. “From that time I developed a passion for the magic of a latent image magically appearing in a tray of liquid chemicals.” Larry remained two degrees of separation from Ansel Adams throughout high school; his neighbors were photographers and friends of Mr. Adams and often mentored young Larry in the art of scenic landscape photography throughout central California. In college, Larry took every photography course offered, ultimately working as an aide to his professor. Today, Larry still appreciates grand landscapes but prefers taking cultural photos of man interacting with his environment, which he describes as more of a fine-art documentary approach; he isn’t afraid to move objects into frame before creating a photo. “The important thing is to establish a connection between my community and the places I travel so I have a better understanding of both history and the culture in general. My strategy today is to create photographs showing the current time and perhaps be compelling enough to make it to the next generation.”
